About KGS

99 Years Ago Founded in 1926 in memory of the legendary Pt. Bhaskarbuva Bakhale, Kalyan Gayan Samaj has been a beacon of Hindustani classical music for nearly a century. What began as a humble initiative by music lovers has grown into a prestigious cultural institution, committed not only to performance but also to the preservation and promotion of India’s classical music traditions. Registered as a Charitable Trust under the Maharashtra State Public Trust Act (1960), the Samaj has hosted landmark festivals and initiatives that have shaped the cultural identity of Kalyan and its surrounding regions.

A Rich Musical Legacy

On the occasion of Golden Jubilee of Samaj in 1976, a Painting Gallery of famous Maestro’s from Music Industry was created with the help of renowned artists/painters/miniaturists from vicinity. Samaj Has preserved all this Heritage of paintings till date and added more paintings to it’s Collection.

Since its inception, Kalyan Gayan Samaj has organized major milestones including:

  • 5th Year Festival (1931)
  • Silver Jubilee (1951)
  • Dinkar Sangeet Vidyalay’s Silver Jubilee (1969)
  • Golden Jubilee (1976), marked by the establishment of a unique Painting Gallery showcasing portraits of musical maestros—an artistic treasure preserved and expanded to this day.

In the late 70s and early 80s, the Samaj paid tribute to Hindustani legends like Pt. Balkrushnabua Ichalkaranjikar, Pt. D.V. Paluskar, and Smt. Kesarbai Kerkar through dedicated festivals featuring top performers of the era. In 1986, the Samaj celebrated its 60th anniversary, and in 1990, introduced the now-iconic Diwali Pahat —a soulful musical celebration at dawn on Diwali, continuing unbroken to this day.

A Platform for Excellence

The Samaj has consistently supported local talent by producing and hosting acclaimed musical plays such as:

  • Sangeet Honaji Bala
  • Sangeet Yayati ani Devayani
  • Matsyagandha
  • Saunshayakallol
  • Sangeet Kadhitari Kothetari

In 2001, the Samaj celebrated its 75th anniversary with a grand three-day Hindustani Classical Music Festival. The event’s overwhelming success led to the birth of the annual Devgandharva Mahotsav, held every December—a flagship event that continues to draw renowned artists and passionate audiences.
